CICI Championship Finals: A Celebration of Unity in Bafut

The finals of the inaugural CICI Championship for Bujong VC took place in Bafut on Saturday, August 30, 2025. This event marked the sixth tournament sponsored by Ndonwi Derick Shu under the CICI Championship. It has been described as one of the largest gatherings in Bafut since the Anglophone crisis.

All seven villages of the Bujong Village Community participated in the competition: Njinteh, Niko, Njibujang, Bujong, Mbebali, Mankaha, and Manji.

The tournament concluded with Mbebali emerging victorious, defeating Bujong 1-0. Prizes were awarded as follows: 40,000 FRS for third place, 75,000 FRS for second place, and 175,000 FRS for the champions.

In a conversation with the sponsor, Ndonwi Derick Shu, he expressed his joy in being part of this impactful event. "I'm happy to have watched and participated in this great competition in 2025, especially since it began in a year filled with personal loss for my family," he shared. "I felt compelled to initiate this competition to honor our sister and father."

Reflecting on the tournament's origins, Ndonwi Derick Shu noted the need for revitalization in Bafut during a time when the area felt deserted. "I initiated this competition during a period when Bafut was a no-go zone. My goal was to engage the youth in our community, to bring animation and life back to Bafut. The first year went well, and with encouragement from the chairman of the Bujong Village Community, we expanded the tournament to include all seven villages of Bujong VC."

Mujashi Robert Che, Vice Chairman of the Bujong Village Community, emphasized the event's significance. "The crowd here today proves that this tournament has touched many hearts. We are grateful for the wonderful work the sponsor has done."

Looking ahead, Ndonwi Derick Shu revealed plans for a larger initiative: "The success of this year’s finals has inspired us to consider expanding the competition to include the entire Bafut fondom next year. We want to create opportunities for more villages to participate."

He observed the spirit of unity at the finals, saying, "People from all walks of life came together, celebrating without acknowledging past grievances. This is the peace we strive for. History shows that war never completely halts life or business; there are always ways to foster resilience. Sports can be a powerful tool in promoting peace and togetherness."

Through the CICI Championship, Bafut has taken a significant step toward healing and community building, proving that even in challenging times, hope and connection can thrive.
