COMINSUD Host Timely Workshop on Climate Resilience
The Community Initiative for Sustainable Development (COMINSUD), in partnership with the World Resources Institute (WRI), held a crucial workshop titled "Resilient Grassroots Actions to Reduce the Negative Effects of Climate Change" at the Epic Center in Bamenda on September 5, 2025. This initiative seeks to empower Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) to engage with regional councils and municipal authorities, addressing the pressing environmental challenges faced by communities in the North West Region of Cameroon.
Addressing Urgent Challenges
Communities in the region are grappling with severe environmental issues, including flooding, waste management crises, and unsustainable mining practices.
Fon Nsoh, coordinator of COMINSUD, emphasized the urgency of the workshop, stating, "We are here to develop local transformative actions that will not only mitigate the impacts of climate change but also enhance the environmental conditions in Bamenda."
Voices of Concern
*Barrister Angu Maurice Epse Nkwenti*, Secretary of the Ntankah II Quarter Council, articulated her community’s struggles with flooding:
> "For years, we've battled devastating floods, particularly during the rainy season. The situation worsened due to land reclamation practices that have altered the natural flow of water. Homes and farms are frequently inundated, creating a dire need for sustainable environmental management. This workshop is timely; I now have the knowledge to engage municipal authorities more effectively."
*Forti Felix Ngomgham*, a councilor from Mile 6 Mankon, highlighted the waste management crisis:
> "Our community has become a dumping ground, which leads to severe pollution and drainage blockages. During dry seasons, the smell and flies from the dump pit are unbearable.
The environmental degradation affects our health and livelihoods. This workshop has opened my eyes to practical solutions, and I plan to mobilize my community to address these issues urgently."
Collaborative Solutions
The workshop provided a platform for participants to brainstorm actionable strategies to tackle these pressing challenges. Topics included innovative waste management techniques, responsible mining practices, and community-led tree planting initiatives. The Coordinator of COMINSUD Fon Nsoh stressed the importance of local engagement:
> "By establishing community nurseries, we can empower residents, especially the youth, to take ownership of their environment. This not only combats climate change but also creates job opportunities."
A Timely Initiative
As communities face increasing environmental pressures, the workshop served as a timely intervention. Participants left with renewed motivation and practical strategies to address their challenges.
This workshop is a significant step toward building resilience against climate change in the North West Region of Cameroon. The outcomes of this workshop not only reflect the commitment of local communities to sustainable development but also underscore the urgent need for collective action to combat environmental degradation and enhance community well-being.
