Election Results Reveal New Faces in North West Regional Assembly

The recently concluded Regional Elections in the Northwest have unveiled a  lineup of 90 councilors who will represent the region's seven divisions at the Northwest Regional Assembly. The official announcement came during a ceremonial session held at the Administrative Court, where the results were publicly proclaimed by Lord Justice Sokem Ngale Mborh, President of the Regional Supervisory Commission.

Impressive engagement marked the elections, with 1,054 out of 1,454 registered voters casting their ballots a turnout that has been lauded as noteworthy.

Statistics provided by ELECAM's Regional Delegate, Mbowoh Elvis, highlighted the participation rates for each division, underscoring a strong democratic spirit. 

Here are the participation metrics for the Divisional Representatives elected by municipal councilors:

 

Boyo: 108 registered voters, 88 participated (81.48%)
Bui: 189 registered voters, 131 participated (89.31%)
Donga-Mantung: 162 registered voters, 117 participated (72.2%)
Menchum: 99 registered voters, 93 participated (93.9%)
Mezam: 221 registered voters, 214 participated (96.83%)
Momo: 124 registered voters, 102 participated (82%)
Ngo-Ketunjia: 96 registered voters, 93 participated (96.88%)

In total, 999 councillors were eligible to vote, with 838 doing so, yielding an overall participation rate of 83.88%.

 The CPDM party's uncontested list across the Northwest Region ensured that all 70 candidates were elected without opposition.

The elections for traditional rulers, which were fiercely contested in four divisions,
Donga-Mantung, Menchum, Momo, and Mezam also revealed significant dynamics. Here are the statistics for traditional rulers voted in by their peers:

Boyo: 67 registered, 13 participated (19.40%)
Bui: 66 registered, 13 participated (19.70%)
Donga-Mantung: 113 registered, 68 participated (60.18%)
Menchum: 70 registered, 65 participated (92.86%)
Mezam: 35 registered, 30 participated (85.71%)
Momo: 88 registered, 38 participated (43.18%)
Ngo-Ketunjia: 16 registered, 11 participated (68.75%)

A total of 455 traditional rulers in the Northwest Region were registered, with 238 voting, resulting in a participation rate of 52.3%.

Key Results for Traditional Rulers

In Donga-Mantung, the list led by Fon Nfor Amidu Nji won decisively with 59 votes against Fon Mbuim Samuel, who received 9 votes. Out of the 113 registered traditional rulers, 68 cast their votes.

In Menchum Division, Fon Ndung Nuhu Mvo’s list triumphed with 34 votes, defeating the current Secretary of the House of Chiefs, Fon Bahmbi III Mathias, who garnered 24 votes. A third candidate, Mommandou Ardo, received 8 votes. Of the 70 anticipated voters, 65 participated.

In Momo Division, Fon Gwan Mbahyam Sig III emerged victorious over Fon Mbabit Humphrey Tangwan, marking his second term in the House.

Controversy in Mezam

Mezam witnessed a contentious election between two lists one led by Fon Ganyonga III Doh and the other by Fon Viyuoh Nelson Sheteh. With 30 votes tallied, Fon Viyuoh received 17 votes, while Fon Doh secured 13. A complaint was filed over alleged voting fraud, claiming a deceased Fon’s vote was cast. However, after review, the commission deemed the complaint inadmissible, concluding that even with the alleged vote, it did not affect the outcome. Fon Viyuoh’s list was subsequently declared the winner.

Boyo, Bui, and Ngoketunjia had unopposed elections with one list each. There is a total of 35 new entrants in the House of Chiefs and Divisional Representatives. According to the law ,The assembly should be scheduled to reconvene for executive elections on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, as the region looks forward to its next steps in governance.
